| The word "DELPHIS" means "DOLPHIN" in ancient Greek. Dolphins symbolize speed, agility and intelligence, which are characteristics that are equally important to our transport company. Delphis also stands for our continuous efforts to respect and protect the environment we operate in, especially the rich and diverse European seas.

Delphis means dolphin in ancient Greek. The Greeks worshipped this intelligent animal, and dolphins were omnipresent in their mythology. Poseidon was often represented with dolphins and the dolphin form of Apollo (Apollo Delphinus) was revered at Delphi. The famous oracle actually got its name from a legend saying that Apollo appeared in the form of a dolphin to sailors on a Cretan ship. Leaping on board, he brought the terrified sailors to Crisa, the coastal port near Delphi, where he transformed himself into a handsome youth and appointed the sailors as priests of his temple.
Of the hundreds of species of dolphins, the Delphinus Delphis (common dolphin) is the only one to bear the Greek name for dolphin. Delphinus means dolphin in Latin and as both the Romans and the Greeks had a profound admiration for this sea mammal, scientists have named one of the most abundant dolphin species Delphinus Delphis.
The common dolphin prefers waters with a temperature higher than 10ƒC. They occur in warm tropical, temperate, tropical and subtropical waters. Common dolphins are very social and can be found in groups of up to 2000 individuals, although units of 10 to 500 are more usual.
Common dolphins are quite abundant in the Pacific ocean, while they are getting scarce in the Mediterranean.
